Extras/Notes
Charlie's is a South End and Boston institution. It used to be open around the clock until 1960 when limited hours were introduced. A locksmith had to be called in-since they had never locked the door before, the owners had long ago lost
the key. In the old days, Sammy Davis Jr. tapdanced out front for spare change, and Charlie's was among the fi rst in Boston to serve non-white customers, notably jazz greats like Duke Ellington who played in downtown hotels but were barred from eating and sleeping there.
